Comet C/2007 F1 was discovered on March 19th. The name LONEOS is an acronym for the Lowell Observatory Near-Earth Object Search, a project that searches for asteroids and comets. In October, LONEOS will be visible in the northwestern sky as it passes through the constellation Coma Berenices (Berenice’s Hair). Coma Berenices is located between Leo (the Lion) and Bootes (the Herdsman). LONEOS will pass through Coma Berenices in a southeasterly direction. By midmonth, LONEOS will pass into Bootes (the Herdsman) moving just beneath Arcturus, the brightest star in Bootes (Arcturus may be more familiar as the tip of the ice cream cone). LONEOS will grow brighter all month, but will be hard to see during the full moon. At the end of the month, LONEOS will be easier to see again moving farther south into Libra (the Scales).
