Sun Sounds Shake EarthThe sun’s interior resonates low-frequency sounds, like a bell vibrating tones. The loudest of the notes have frequencies around .0003 hertz, which is about one vibration every five minutes. The sun’s surface, or photosphere, moves up and down in complex patterns caused by the internal vibrations. The vibrations are carried outward into space by the magnetic field in the solar wind. Researchers believe these vibrations shake Earth very slightly too. In Earth’s seismic records, geophysicists have discovered very faint, low-frequency “hums” that are constantly present. A team of 5 researchers, lead by statistician David Thomson of Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, have discovered that the Earth’s “hums” mimic the sun’s vibrations. The team believes the sun’s sounds are causing vibrations in Earth’s magnetosphere. The sun’s low-frequency sounds actually shake the ground on Earth and are visible on seismic records. |
