Space Tourism Qualifications

NASA has released the criteria of qualifications for space tourists who want to visit the International Space Station. The nine-page report has been the result of two years of work on the delicate subject and agreed on by the space agencies of the United States, Russia, Canada, Japan, and Europe.

Besides the payment of the usual $20 million fee and training, a tourist must now pass other criteria. Tourists are now required to speak and read English and pass medical tests. The candidate must have his past and present conduct assessed. Delinquency or misconduct in prior employment or the military would be weighed heavily. Other types of disqualification could include any of the following: criminal activity; infamous or notoriously disgraceful conduct; intentional false statement or fraud; habitual use of intoxicating beverages to excess, abuse of narcotics, drugs or other controlled substances; and membership or sponsorship in organizations which adversely affect the public’s confidence in the space station or its partners. A person’s age at the time of any offense and the surrounding circumstances would be taken into account.
