Summer HighlightsOn June 10, a partial solar eclipse will be visible just before sunset beginning at 7:28 p.m. and lasting until 8:10 p.m. The sun will be only 2 degrees above the horizon and the moon will block about 31% of the sun’s face. It’s the only solar eclipse of the summer visible in our sky. The Calumet Astronomical Society’s FREE telescopic viewing event at Lemon Lake County Park is scheduled for July 19 and 20. The Delta Aquarid meteor shower occurs from July 26 to July 30. Look in the early morning sky for about 20 meteors visible per hour. They will appear to come from their radiant, located in the constellation of Aquarius (the Water-Bearer). The viewing conditions are good this year with the moon in the western sky and the radiant in the eastern sky. The Perseid meteor shower peaks from August 12 to August 14. Look for about 60 meteors visible per hour beginning right after dusk and continuing until dawn. Their radiant is the constellation of Perseus (the Hero) located in the northern sky next to the constellation of Cassiopeia (the Queen) also called the Big W. The heaviest part of the shower usually occurs after sunset until midnight. The viewing conditions are excellent this year. |
