Meteor Showers of October

Meteor showers are named after the constellations they appear to emanate from in space, called the radiant. October has two main meteor showers: the Draconids from Draco (the Dragon) in the north, and Orionids from Orion (the Hunter) rising in the east. The Draconids will peak on the 8th, look to the north for about 10 fast-moving meteors per hour. The Draconids are remnants of Comet Giacobini-Zinner that orbits the sun every 6.6 years. Viewing conditions are favorable due to the new moon. The Orionids will peak on the 21st. Expect to see about 25 to 60 meteors visible per hour. The Orionids are remnants of Comet Halley that orbits the sun every 76 years. This year the viewing conditions for the Orionids are poor, due to the full moon.
