Last Year for Leonid Storm

On November 19, after midnight, the Leonid meteor shower will be visible in our sky. The Comet Tempel-Tuttle returns every three centuries, and is the source of material for the Leonids. In 1998, the comet returned to orbit the sun and scatter its path of debris. For three years after the comet’s return, the Leonids are more like storms than showers. Hundreds to thousands of meteors may be visible per hour, compared to 10 or so visible per hour in any normal year. Each year the number will decrease until another passing of the source comet to replenish the Leonids.
