Lyrid Meteor ShowerThe Lyrid meteor shower is active from April 16 to April 25, but the most active time or peak is on April 22. The best time to view the shower is from 10:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m., before the waning gibbous moon rises and floods the sky with light. The radiant, or point of apparent origin, is near the border between Lyra (the Harp) in the Summer Triangle and Hercules (the Hero). The radiant can be seen rising in the eastern sky, and is at a good altitude by 10:00. This year, the trailing edge of the shower is visible from North America. Expect about 20 meteors visible per hour, although there may be unexpected bursts of activity known to occur during the Lyrids. |
