Eclipses and Viewing

The second total solar eclipse for 2003 will occur on November 23 at 6:00 p.m. The shadow of the sun will fall across the face of the Earth. The path of totality, where the entire sun is blocked from view by the moon, is visible only in Antarctica. A partial solar eclipse will be visible from Australia and New Zealand.

On November 8, 2003 at 8:00 p.m., the second total lunar eclipse of the year will begin. This lunar eclipse is shorter than May’s eclipse. The moon moves into Earth’s shadow at 8:00. Totality, when the moon is completely engulfed in Earth’s shadow, will last for about 25 minutes. The moon passes through the southern part of Earth’s shadow, causing the southern part of the moon to appear a little brighter than the northern half.

The Calumet Astronomical Society (CAS) will have a FREE telescopic viewing event on November 7 and 8 at Lemon Lake County Park. The theme of the viewing is the lunar eclipse. The Friday and Saturday night event begins at dark. The eclipse occurs on Saturday night and can be viewed with the naked eye.
For more information, contact the CAS at www.casonline.org or Lemon Lake County Park.
