ESA Scales Back

The European Space Agency (ESA) is having budget problems and will cancel some of their future projects. Eddington, a mission to launch a space telescope designed to find earthlike planets outside our solar system, was cancelled. Eddington had instruments designed to study the vibrations of stars using a new technique called astroseismology (star quake). The Mercury Surface Element Lander for the BepiColombo mission to survey Mercury has been cancelled. The BepiColombo mission will be launched to Mercury in 2011 with two orbiters. One will study the surface and one will study the magnetospheric environment. The cancelled Lander would have set down near Mercury’s North or South Pole.
