Bollide Meteor Near Chicago

Tom Skilling of Channel 9 News reported that on Monday, August 16, 2004 at about 1:00 a.m., O’Hare International Airport reported seeing a flash of light and hearing an explosion when a meteor exploded in the atmosphere. The explosion was heard and reported in other areas, including Jefferson Park, Norridge, and Park Ridge in Illinois. Astronomer Dan Joyce called it a bollide meteor, which would have to weigh around 1,000 pounds to create a flash of light and have an explosive entry. Mark Benjamin of the Cernan Space Center says if you can hear a meteor, pieces will reach the ground. The pieces of the exploded meteor are probably strewn over a wide area. Last year, another meteor exploded over Illinois and Indiana and many small fragments were found in both states.
