December Planets

Venus can be seen after sunset low in the southwestern sky passing from Sagittarius (the Archer) into Capricornus (the Sea Goat). Venus appears higher every night. Venus is brilliant and the brightest object in the night sky after the moon. Venus looks like a bright white star.

Jupiter can be seen medium high in the southeastern sky after sunset on the borders of the constellations Aries (the Ram) and Pisces (the Fishes). Jupiter is great to view, very bright, and easy to find. Jupiter sets before dawn. Jupiter looks like a very bright, yellow-colored star.

Mars can be seen rising in the southeastern sky in the constellation Leo (the Lion). Mars appears earlier every night, rising about 11:30 at the beginning of December and around 10:00 by the end of the month. Mars is in the southeastern sky at dawn. Mars looks like a ruddy-colored star.

Mercury can be seen after the first week of December in the predawn eastern sky moving through the constellation Scorpius (the Scorpion). Mercury reaches its highest point in the eastern sky on the 23rd. Mercury looks like a small white star.

Saturn can be seen rising in the eastern sky about 3:00 a.m. in the constellation Virgo (the Maiden), just to the northwest of the bright star Spica. Saturn appears a little higher every night and will rise earlier throughout the month. Saturn looks like an amber-colored star.
