Summer PlanetsMercury appears in the western sky after sunset in the last half of June, moving from Taurus (the Bull) to Gemini (the Twins). In July, Mercury moves into Cancer (the Crab) and disappears until mid-August. It reappears in the morning sky before dawn in the eastern sky. Mercury looks like a small white star. Venus gets higher in the western sky after sunset in June in the constellation Gemini (the Twins). It moves to Cancer (the Crab) in July and into Leo (the Lion) near its bright star Regulus (the Heart of the Lion) by the end of July. In August, Venus moves into Virgo (the Maiden) by Jupiter very low in the western sky after sunset. Venus looks like a very bright white star. Mars rises after midnight in June in the constellation Pisces (the Fishes). Mars appears brighter and earlier each night and is high in the south before dawn. In July, Mars rises around midnight and is visible all night. By August, Mars rises by 10:30 p.m. and moves from Pisces into Aries (the Ram). Mars looks like a ruddy-colored star. Jupiter can be seen after sunset medium high in the southern sky in the constellation Virgo (the Maiden) in June. Jupiter will be visible in the southwestern sky through July but appears lower each night. In August, Jupiter appears low in the western sky very close to Venus near the bright star Spica. Jupiter looks like a very bright, yellow-colored star. Saturn can be seen low in the western sky after sunset in the constellation Gemini (the Twins) almost in line with the bright stars Castor and Pollux in June. Saturn disappears in the first week of July as it passes behind the sun. In late August, Saturn reappears in the early morning eastern sky, rising earlier each morning. Saturn looks like a bright amber-colored star. |
