December Planets

Mercury can be seen as it passes from Scorpius (the Scorpion) into Sagittarius (the Archer) in the predawn sky. Mercury is in close conjunction with Mars and Jupiter on the 9th. Mercury looks like a small white star.

Venus can be seen in the beginning of the month at sunset very low in the southwestern sky in the constellation Sagittarius (the Archer). By the end of the month, Venus will be visible for about an hour and a half after sunset and be higher in the sky. Venus is bright and visible before the stars appear. Venus looks like a very bright white star.

Mars can be seen rising in the southeastern sky within an hour before sunrise moving from the constellation Libra (the Scales) into Scorpius (the Scorpion). Mars isn’t very bright, but is close to Mercury and Jupiter on the 9th. Mars looks like a ruddy-colored star.

Jupiter can be seen by the end of the month rising about a half hour before the sun in the southeastern sky in the constellation Scorpius (the Scorpion). Jupiter is bright and can be seen close to Mercury and Mars on the 9th. Jupiter will rise earlier throughout the month. Jupiter looks like a bright, yellow-colored star.

Saturn can be seen rising in the northeastern sky around 10;00 p.m. in the constellation Leo (the Lion) near the bright star Regulus (the Heart of the Lion) in front of the tip of the backward question mark. Saturn rises earlier every night and can be seen rising about by 8:00 p.m. by the end of December. Saturn and its rings are great to view this month when it gets high overhead. Saturn looks like a bright amber-colored star.
