The Merrillville Community Planetarium is part of the Merrillville Community School Corporation, a K-12 public school system in Northwest Indiana. The Planetarium is located in Clifford Pierce Middle School. We provide programming for Merrillville classes, outside groups, and the public.

  • 1739 - John Winthorp of Mass. observed sunspots for 2 days and published a report on it. He also observed the transit of Venus.
  • 1971 - Salyut 1 (USSR) launched. Large space station intended for Soyuz 10 to dock but was unsuccessful.
  • 1975 - India announced its first satellite launched into space.
  • 1982 - U.S. announced the first black astronaut Guion S. Bluford and the first woman astronaut Sally K. Ride.
  • 2001 - STS-100 (Endeavour). ISS assembly: robotic arm. Duration: 11d 21h. Landing at Edwards.
  • 2004 - Launch of ISS Expedition 9 aboard Soyuz TMA-4 mission. Crew includes 1 astronaut and 1 cosmonaut. Duration: 186 days.
